Hope Solo

Hope Solo has been suspended for six months following a comment she made after losing to Sweden at the Rio Olympics. She called her opponents "cowards."

The US Women's National Team has come down hard on Hope Solo, suspending her for her comments after Sweden eliminated the US from the Rio Olympics soccer tournament.

The USWNT announced Wednesday that Solo would be suspended for six months for "conduct that is counter to the organization's principles."

The suspension is effective immediately.

Sunil Gulati, the president of US soccer, said in the statement:

"The comments by Hope Solo after the match against Sweden during the 2016 Olympics were unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players. Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect. We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions.

"Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we've had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a US National Team member, US Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action."

The US lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals in penalty kicks. Afterward, Solo ripped the Swedes, saying they played like "cowards" in using a conservative style over the second half of the game.

"I'm very proud of this team," Solo said after the loss. "But I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly believe that."

She continued, adding a barb toward former US coach Pia Sundhage: "Sweden dropped off. They didn't want to open play. They didn't want to play great soccer ... We had that style of play when Pia [Sundhage] was our coach. I don't think they're going make it far in the tournament. I think it was very cowardly."

Sweden lost in the final to Germany.

Solo will not be "eligible for selection" for the US until February 2017, according to the statement.

US women's soccer coach says Hope Solo's contract was terminated for reasons beyond her comments following Olympics loss

US women's soccer coach Jill Ellis addressed the decision to terminate Hope Solo's contract for the first time Tuesday.

In August, Solo was suspended and had her contract terminated for her comments after the US women's team lost to Sweden in the Olympics. In a postgame interview, Solo called the Swedish team "cowards" for the way they played, saying the best team didn't win.

In a statement, Ellis said the decision to terminate Solo's contract was about more than her comments (via Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl).

"Over time there's been off-the-field distractions, and the federation has taken action. Each time action has been taken, there's been made clear an expectation that this would be the last time such a step would be necessary. Sadly, Hope's postgame comments forced us to make a significant decision. It wasn't a decision just made about comments. It was a sum total of actions that have unfortunately shown a negative light on our program."

In 2014, Solo was charged with two counts of domestic violence after an altercation with her half-sister and nephew. A report from ESPN showed that police records described Solo as "belligerent" and "intoxicated" when she was arrested.

Prior to the Olympics, Solo was criticized for posts on her social media accounts where she showed her protective gear against the Zika virus. Crowds in Rio later chanted "Zika" at her during a match.

The US Women's Soccer Coach Was Not Happy With Hope Solo's Latest Twitter Outburst

Hope Solo went on a Twitter rant after the US beat Colombia 3-0 because she was not happy with Brandi Chastain's criticism of the defense during the broadcast.

One of the most controversial tweets read: "Lay off commentating about defending and gking until you get more educated the game has changed from a decade ago."

And the US coach, Pia Sundhage said Solo won't be punished for her rant, but she did speak with the goalie, according to Sports Illustrated.

Sundhage said:

"We had a conversation: If you look at the women's national team, what do you want (people) to see? What do you want them to hear? And that's where we do have a choice - as players, coaches, staff, the way we respond to certain things."

This isn't the first time Solo has lost her temper in the public eye. After the World Cup in 2007, she criticized her coach after he benched her. Solo said "It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There's no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves..."

Hope Solo Trashes Her Old Coach, Claims He Once Shoved Her

The always outspoken Hope Solo absolutely rips former US national team head coach Greg Ryan in her new book, "Solo: A Memoir of Hope."

Solo famously slammed Ryan in an interview after he benched her in the 2007 World Cup semifinals. And in her book, she goes even deeper.

Here's how she introduces Ryan:

"If I had made a list of all the people I thought might coach the national team, Greg Ryan would probably have been dead last. ... He mostly faded into the background, rarely talking and never taking charge at practice. If he had any leadership skills or technical savvy, I never saw it."

She goes on to claim he was insensitive to her when her father died — yelling at her in practice and refusing to let her play in an exhibition game against Brazil.

In addition, she says Ryan fired a goalkeeping coach and told the coach Hope wanted him fired, when that actually wasn't the case.

But the most scandalous of Hope's claims about Ryan is that he allegedly shoved in her in hotel room after telling her she was being benched for the Brazil game in 2007:

"We were both silent. I had nothing left to say so I stood up to leave. Greg leaned over and pushed me back down on the couch. Hard. 'You fucking leave when I saw you can leave,' he said."

Ryan denied the allegation this morning, calling it "completely false."

hope solo is angry

Hope Solo wrote a book called "Solo: A Memoir Of Hope."

It's primarily focused around periods of her life — her incredibly sad childhood, and the 2007 World Cup where she was infamously benched.

But there are also a ton of juicy details about her private life (she once kissed a girl in France!), soccer life (she never wanted to be a goalie), and entertainment life (she clashed with she Dancing With The Stars partner).

We compiled the 14 most interesting nuggets to save you some time.

She was kidnapped by her father when she was 7

Solo's father Gerry was homeless and constantly in trouble with the law. One afternoon he picked up Hope and her brother without their mother knowing and took them on a trip to Seattle.

Hope's mother contacted the police, and a few days later Gerry was arrested in a Seattle bank.

She and Abby Wambach used to not like each other

According to Solo, Wambach told coach Greg Ryan to bench Hope in the 2007 World Cup semifinal against Brazil — a game that the US went on to lose 4-0.

After Hope lashed out at the decision in a postgame interview, Wambach turned against her and the two rarely interacted.

But during World Cup 2011, the two players gained a mutual respect for each other and eventually reached what Solo calls a "detente."

She once kissed a girl

A French girl kept flirting with her, so eventually Hope gave in and kissed her.

Here's how Hope describes it:

"I'd had gay teammates throughout my career — I thought maybe I should see their side of things. So we made out. Interesting but not life-changing. I was straight."

Former NFL player Jerramy Stevens appeared in court today on a fourth-degree assault charge stemming from an alleged domestic violence involving Hope Solo last night.

He was not charged and later released.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the alleged incident started with Solo's younger brother Marcus using a stun gun in a fight with "unwanted party guests."

Marcus called the police, and was talking to them outside when Hope allegedly went out and told him not to talk to them.

The police saw a "small amount of blood on her elbow" and searched the house.

According to the police report, officers found Stevens sleeping in the upstairs bedroom, as well as a "another woman laying on the kitchen floor with a hip injury". They saw blood on Stevens' cheek and shirt, and he told them that it may have gotten there when Solo kissed him.

But there was also allegedly some sort of argument between Solo and Stevens, according to Chris Daniels of KING-TV:

We'll update here when we get more information >

Stevens has a lengthy legal history. He was arrested for punching two bouncers in March 2011. He was caught with marijuana in 2010. He was convicted of drunk driving in 2007. He was convicted of misdemeanor assault when he was in high school. He was accused but never charged with sexual assault when he was in college in 2000.

Hope Solo And Fiance Jerramy Stevens Were Allegedly Fighting Over Whether To Live In Florida Or Washington

Tuesday, we heard a rumor that Hope Solo was set to marry ex-NFL player Jerramy Stevens. We didn't believe it, it was the first we had even heard that the two were dating.

Later in the afternoon however, a disturbing story began to unwind and we found out that Stevens and Solo had been dating for two months, applied for a marriage license last week, and were set to wed yesterday. This information was in police reports because Stevens was arrested for allegedly assaulting Solo.

The argument was allegedly over whether the couple would live in Washington or Florida after they got married. From the AP:

The two, who have been in a relationship for two months, were set to get married Tuesday and argued over whether to live in Washington or Florida after their marriage, according to court documents.

Police in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland responded to a disturbance at a home around 3:45 a.m. Monday involving a physical altercation between eight people during a party, said Lt. Murray.

He said officers contacted several people in the home who appeared intoxicated and didn't cooperate with police, but determined based on information and observations that there was probable cause to arrest Stevens for investigation of fourth-degree assault. Murray didn't identify the alleged victim, but court records show it was Solo, who received a cut to her elbow.

Because there was no evidence connecting Stevens to assault, he was released yesterday, but the case is being further investigated. Solo was also in court yesterday but did not respond to any questions from reporters.

We'll keep you updated on this if we hear anything else.

Hope Solo's New Husband Is An Infamous Ex-NFL Player With A Disturbing Criminal Record

US soccer goalie Hope Solo and ex-NFL player Jerramy Stevens got married last night, one day after Stevens was arrested on suspicion of assault against her.

Stevens was not charged after appearing in court with Solo by his side yesterday.

News of their marriage is a huge surprise to everyone — not just because they were only dating for two months, but because of Stevens' infamous criminal record.

Solo is one of the most recognizable and marketable female athletes in the country, and she has married Jerramy Stevens, an ex-athlete with a legal history that includes a DUI, a hit-and-run, reckless driving, assault, and an accusation of rape that was never charged, but resulted in Stevens paying $300,000 in a civil suit.

In 2008, Ken Armstrong and Nick Perry of the Seattle Times wrote a long article about Stevens and the uncharged 2000 sexual assault accusation against him.

Stevens was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in 2000 after an eyewitness saw him having sex with a University of Washington freshman against the side of a fraternity house. Witnesses claimed that the woman exhibited symptoms of a date-rape drug, but blood tests were conducted too late to be conclusive, and Stevens was not charged because prosecutors couldn't prove that there wasn't consent.

The woman left UW and says she suffered from depression after the incident.

The Seattle Times detailed the rest of Stevens' legal issues in the article. Here's the rundown:

  • In 1998, Stevens was charged with felony assault while he was in high school for getting in a prearranged fight and stomping on the victims' head while he was unconscious on the ground. He agreed to a plea deal for misdemeanor assault, but tested positive for marijuana during his house arrest.
  • In 2000, Stevens sideswiped a car on a highway and left the scene. He was only fined $119.
  • In 2001, Stevens was sentenced to 90 days in jail for crashing his car into the side of a nursing home and fleeing the scene.
  • In 2003, Stevens was caught with two open bottles of champagne in his car. His blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit and he was sentenced to seven days in jail for reckless driving.
  • In 2004, Stevens settled a civil suit brought by the accuser of the alleged 2000 sexual assault for $300,000.
  • In 2007, Stevens was arrested for DUI in Arizona with a blood-alcohol level 2.5x the legal limit. He served 12 days of a 30-day mandatory minimum sentence.

Recently, Stevens was arrested for allegedly attacking two bouncers at a bar in Florida in 2011. And Monday night he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence involving Solo, but not charged.

Stevens is infamous. Players like him are the reason NFL commissioner Roger Goodell punishes off-the-field issues so harshly now.

It's stunning that he is back in the sports world as the husband of a high-profile athlete.

12 Surprising Anecdotes About Hope Solo In The Wake Of Her Shock Wedding

Hope Solo got married to ex-NFL player Jerramy Stevens yesterday.

Given Stevens' criminal record, and the fact that they were only dating for two months, it was a huge shock.

How did one of the most recognizable female athletes in the country end up with one of the most infamous football players of the last decade?

In her book, "Solo: A Memoir of Hope," Solo writes about her rough childhood, her checkered dating history, and her clashes with coaches and teammates. She makes it clear that she's far from a clean-cut "role model" that some people make her out to be.

We read the book this summer and pulled out 12 surprising anecdotes that explain where she comes from and who she is.

Her childhood was rougher than we thought

Not only was her father homeless, her mother struggled with alcoholism and her brother was always in trouble at school.

The family also had money troubles. They were evicted after Gerry was sent to prison, and in her teen years, Hope's mother and step-father told her she should quit the national travel soccer team she was playing for because it was too expensive.

Eventually, community members pitched in and paid Hope's travel expenses.

She likes to party

There's lots of little instances where Hope gets wild in this book.

One time, the US was holding a training camp in southern California when Hope and a friend drove to Vegas, partied through the night, and then drove back for training the next day without sleeping.

Hope Solo Blasts The Media, Denies Alleged Domestic Violence Incident Involving Her Husband

Hope Solo talked about the alleged domestic violence incident involving her now-husband Jerramy Stevens for the first time last night.

She denied that the incident involved violence against her, and said the media prejudged her husband.

Here's what she said (via Larry Brown Sports):

"My life is great. My life is happy. It's unfortunate what the media can do to judge before the facts are out there. It's hard to see. It's a hard truth but it's part of life. I'm happy. I'm happily married. I would never stand for domestic violence. I've never been hit in my life. It's unfortunate, but that's what the media can do."

Stevens was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence two weeks ago after police say they found blood on Solo's elbow when they arrived to break up an alleged altercation between Solo's brother and an unwanted party guest.

Stevens appeared in court but was not charged, and the two got married the next day.

The incident made headlines because Stevens has a lengthy criminal history. He has been charged with assault, DUI, and reckless driving, and he was once sentenced 90 days in jail for driving into a nursing home and fleeing the season. He was also accused of rape but never charged in a high-profile incident that ultimately resulted in him paying $300,000 in a civil suit.

Hope Solo, goalkeeper for the U.S. women's soccer team, was arrested on Friday night for allegedly striking her sister and her nephew during a dispute at her home in a Seattle suburb, police told the Seattle Times.

Solo, 32, was hosting a party at her house in Kirkland when the dispute took place, the Times reported, citing a Kirkland police spokesman.

The soccer star is being held without bail in a local jail, on two charges of assault in the fourth degree, according to the jail's inmate registry, where she is listed by her married name, Hope Amelia Stevens.

Her husband, Jerramy Stevens, is a former National Football League player for the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Solo has appeared as a contestant on ABC TV's "Dancing with the Stars," and has played on two teams that won Olympic gold medals for women's soccer.

Kirkland police did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation, and it was not clear whether Solo had a lawyer.

Soccer star Hope Solo has finally responded to her nude photos being released Saturday after being hacked in the second round of celebrity photo leaks.

While other victims like Jennifer Lawrence, Gabrielle Union, and Kate Upton have made statements about contacting the FBI, Solo took to her Facebook page to say that the incident went "beyond the bounds of human decency":

It is extremely sad and unfortunate that the rights of so many women were violated by the unauthorized release of private photographs. This act goes beyond the bounds of human decency and, as such, I stand united with all the women affected and am exploring every option to protect my privacy.

In the same post, Solo also addressed her current legal issues. The 33-year-old pleaded not guilty to two counts of domestic violence charges in June stemming from an altercation with her sister and 17-year-old nephew.

In addition, while I understand that the public desires more information regarding the allegations against me, I continue to maintain my innocence against these charges. And, once all the facts come to light and the legal process is concluded, I am confident that I will be fully exonerated.

Solo's post has nearly 10,000 "likes," with an overwhelming majority of comments supporting her:

ESPN tells a shockingly different story of soccer star Hope Solo's domestic-violence arrest

$

hope solo 2

Last summer Hope Solo got busted on domestic-violence charges involving a drunken encounter with her half-sister and nephew.

Between then and now we'd gotten sporadic updates on what had happened that night, but nothing nearly as extensive as a report from ESPN's investigative series "Outside the Lines."

The report uses police records, interviews, sworn depositions, and "other documents" to paint a terrible picture of a woman who will just so happen to be tending goal Monday against Australia.

First the report details how Solo's aforementioned half-sister (Teresa Obert) was motivated to give her and her son's side of the story because Solo had been using her fame to wage a publicity tour on outlets such as "Good Morning Americaand ESPN's own espnW, painting herself as the victim rather than the aggressor:

Obert's son, who recently turned 18 but whom ESPN is not naming because he was a minor at the time of the incident, declined to be interviewed by Outside the Lines. He's big, 6-foot-8, 270 pounds, and Solo, who is 5-foot-9, 150 pounds, invoked her nephew's size to make her case to GMA — something she would state again to espnW.

"I'm not going to go into all of the details, uh, but it was a scary night," Solo said to GMA. "I was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of my 17-year-old nephew, who is 6-foot-9, 280 pounds. I was struck over the head, and concussed pretty severely. It was a very scary night."

Obert says she couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"I felt like I had just been kicked in the head," she says. "She should have been happy, but then, randomly, she goes on 'Good Morning America' and lies. I was very upset. It never had anything to do with size. She has tried to make him feel small his whole life. He's not aggressive. She's a trained athlete. She's strong."

Obert instead decided to describe in detail how Solo allegedly grabbed her son and smashed his head into the concrete of their garage floor:

Instead, Solo followed him into the home's converted garage, where the teenager then yelled for his mother, prompting Solo to call him a "pussy" and a "mama's boy" (…) He then told Solo, "You'll never know what it's like to be a mother, because even if you did have children, they would have the most unhappy childhoods because you have no compassion." He told police Solo lunged at him to "take a swing," hitting him lightly in the face. He said she charged and struck him multiple times. Obert, who had come into the room, said in her deposition and in an interview with Outside the Lines that her son briefly subdued Solo and she seemed to calm down. Obert told the teenager to let his aunt up off the ground. "She's done," Obert recalled telling her son, according to her deposition. He didn't believe his mom, but she said, "No, she's done. You can let go, she's done."

But when Obert's son let Solo go, he told police she "immediately grabbed his hair, pulled his head down and started punching him in the face repeatedly." Later, in the deposition, he said Solo "jumped on top of me and started bashing my head into the cement" inside the garage.

"She grabbed him by the head and she kept slamming him into the cement over and over again," Obert told Outside the Lines. "So I came from behind her, and I pulled her over and, you know, to get her off my son. And then, once she got off, she started punching me in the face over and over again."

After the police arrived they arrested Solo and immediately noted that she reeked of alcohol. She was held in detention at the station for two days where she remained hostile:

Over the next few hours, Cpl. Robert Russell was among those who processed Solo. In his report, Russell wrote that as Solo arrived at the Kirkland jail, "I could hear the arrestee yelling profanities inside the patrol vehicle." As he escorted her to jail, he observed that "she showed signs of being intoxicated. Her eyes were bloodshot, speech was slurred, lack of good coordination, and the smell of intoxicants coming from her breath were present."

Solo was repeatedly insulting Russell and Goguen, according to the report, and it was Goguen whom she informed that her necklace was worth more than he made in a year. As Russell was fingerprinting Solo, she "made numerous statements that I was not worth anything, and should be proud to have such authority."

Solo continued with her insults of Goguen and Russell "to incite some reaction" and then turned her attention to the jail staff. As she was being told to walk to the search area, Solo pulled away from an officer, leading her to be taken to a holding cell. There, Russell wrote, "officers took [Solo] to the ground to gain her compliance." It was at this point, Russell wrote, that Solo told one of the officers that if she weren't in handcuffs, "I'd kick your ass."

The case was dismissed in January (prompting Solo to parade her "victim" narrative). When asked what US soccer did about the situation, Solo's sister said she didn't have the slightest clue, adding that they interviewed neither her nor her son.

As we said earlier, Solo will be starting Monday night (barring a last-minute change of heart). Rooting for her may be kind of tough.

The US beat New Zealand 2-0 in their opening match of the Rio Olympics, but the contest was most notable for some mocking chants by the fans in attendance.

Each time American goalkeeper Hope Solo touched the ball, the crowd booed. That was quickly followed by a loud chant of "Zika!"

You can hear the chant here:

The chant appears to be in response to an Instagram photo posted by Solo a week before the Olympics.

In that photo, Solo is wearing a net over her head and holding a bottle of insect repellent. The photo included the caption, "Not sharing this!!! Get your own! #zikaproof #RoadToRio."

Hope Solo rips Swedish women's soccer team for playing like 'cowards' and says the best team didn't win

The US women's soccer team suffered a shocking loss to Sweden in the Olympic quarterfinal, ending the pursuit of a gold medal.

After the match remained tied at 1-1 through 120 minutes, it went to penalty kicks for the first time in Olympic women's soccer.

From there, the US went through a brutal meltdown. Alex Morgan's shot was saved, and Christen Press' shot sailed over the net. Although Hope Solo managed to save one of Sweden's shots, it wasn't enough, and Sweden advanced.

Afterward, Solo was less than complimentary of the Swedish team, ripping its style of play and saying Sweden didn't deserve to win (via Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl):

"I thought that we played a courageous game. I thought we had many opportunities on goal. I think we showed a lot of heart. We came back from a goal down. I'm very proud of this team. But I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly believe that. I think you saw American heart. You saw us give everything we had today."

When asked why she said Sweden played like cowards, she said:

"Sweden dropped off. They didn't want to open play. They didn't want to play great soccer. It was a combative game, a physical game. Exactly what they wanted and exactly what their game-plan was. They dropped into a 50. They didn't try and press. They didn't want to open the game. And they tried to counter with long balls. We had that style of play when Pia [Sundhage] was our coach. I don't think they're going make it far in the tournament. I think it was very cowardly. But they won. They're moving on, and we're going home."

While Solo is entitled to her critique of another team's style of play, it's also not a great look. Sweden chose to play conservatively, and ultimately, it worked.
